Jill Johnston won the “My First Quilt” category at this year’s Festival of Quilts in August 2014!

After retiring it took me 5 years to make time for my sewing. I learnt to sew from my mother at an early age and over the years have done dress making, soft furnishings, embroidery and cross stitch but fancied trying patchwork and quilting after seeing friends work. I had a small Elna and made my first bag but decided I wanted a machine that did more so, using birthday & christmas money from Dad, I bought my first Janome, a DC3050, in John Lewis at Peterborough in April 2013 where I got talking to a fellow customer, Stuart Hillard!

After several more bags and table runners, in June 2013 I embarked on my first quilt. I went to a series of workshops for a s12 block sampler quilt and also added more blocks from books and the internet. My fabric choices were automatically the autumn colours I favour and the flying geese borders came about because I had fabrics left and I like the challenge of accurate flying geese.

I entered the Festival of Quilts with no expectation of being placed but in the hope of a favourable judges comment so was totally shocked to win. After a short while I knew what I would spend my unexpected windfall (the prize money) on – another Janome machine and chose the Horizon Memorycraft 8200QC and can’t wait to learn all about what it can do.
